Most of us think of our Personal Space as being just our Body Space but in fact the boundaries of our Personal Space encompass four distinct aspects; Soul, Body, Home and Life. To show you what I mean I’ve created a few exercises you can try out and see if you can expand your experience to include all four areas. The various tips and tricks I have to share on how to make good use of the full scope of your Personal Space will assist in boosting your overall energy as you get to know yourself better.
Personal Space Exercises:
Body Space – How do you choose to look each day?
- Are you a bright colors kind of person, or is black your theme color?
- Do you dress casually or formally when given a choice?
- Do you wear comfortable shoes or stylish 3” spikes that hurt your feet but make you feel powerful anyway?
Observing what you chose for your wardrobe and why you have chosen it, will add to the affect you are trying to create. If any of your choices are for “other approval” and not what you would do if you “had a choice,” then I recommend you explore this further and see why you value the opinion of others over your own. That is a major energy drainer we all deal with because we can’t really get approval from another – it can only genuinely come from within. If what you wear is not your choice due to work requirements – see if you can find a way to personalize your outfit such as wearing jewelry or some other item that isn’t against the rules yet allows you to express your individuality.
Home Space – Rooms or Spaces You Avoid
Do you have any rooms you “junk” or closets or drawers that you just toss things in and then you never visit them again? This is a mirror action to things in your life you are not “owing” and dealing with as well. Perhaps you have a health issue you ignore or want a new job but don’t have the energy to do the work to find it. Oddly enough by cleaning out these “junk” areas you may find the disowned areas in your life magically get done….all by just cleaning out the equivalent energy that is stored in your home.
Soul Space – Quiet Time
Remember Kindergarten days when school was a half-day and even then we had rest or nap time? What makes us think as adults that the need for daily rest and rejuvenation is no longer necessary? No wonder we get white hair and arthritis – we never give ourselves restful Quite Time anymore. Unfortunately the voice of our Soul – in “inner voice” is a whisperer and the only way to access it is to BE QUIET. I think as adults we notice how much needs to get done and we think we must push on or it will never get done….guess what? It never does get done and that is actually a good thing for it gives us something to look forward to …tomorrow after we rest and revive ourselves.
Life Space – How Happy Are You?
As a fun exercise you might take this short quiz daily for one week. Jot down your answers in your cell phone or note pad. Set a reminder that will go off at these specific six times a day;
- Just after waking
- Right before lunch
- Right after lunch
- Mid afternoon
- Just after you get home for the day
- Just before bed
At each designated time stop what you are doing for just a second and ask “how happy am I right now?” Rate this on a scale of 1-10 with 1 = “miserable” to 10= “dancing on air.”
After one week look over your notes and see if you notice a pattern in your mood swings. Next try to find a way to re-energize the low moments and build upon the high moments. For instance you might find first thing in the morning you are “miserable” but after lunch you feel “great” – perhaps you don’t let yourself have a moment for a food you love in the morning? What could you add to your morning that would energize you? Wake up to music vs a screaming alarm? Pass on the morning depressing news? Eat a favorite blueberry muffin? You get the picture.
Give these tips a try and see if you get a new image of just how large your Personal Space truly is and how powerful it can be for you when you consciously own and use all the space power you have been given.
