Use Your Powerful “Off” Switch

Personal Space is slowly becoming extinct. Everywhere we go we are constantly connected to everyone else on the planet. Everywhere we turn someone is telling us how to eat, what to eat, what not to eat, how to dress our body in the latest (and only approved of) styles, how to decorate our home, what the latest and greatest is for every moment of our life experience. Even if we turned off all the TV ads, radio marketing and newspaper ads, internet or magazine publications we would still be prompted by well-meaning others to do it their way. And always there is that unspoken “or else” that is implied. Or else you won’t be popular, or else you won’t get that job, or else you won’t look attractive. And the worst one of all; “or else you won’t be loved.” 2-1-14 (11)

Every one of these subtle and not too subtle voices coaxes us all day long to comply. Before you know it, you’ve lost the essence of what makes you tick, what makes you happy. You are lost as to what makes you, YOU. Reclaim and take back ownership of your Personal Space by tuning out the world on a daily basis. You’ll be glad you did and it will keep you sane. The only True voice is the one within your heart and soul; this is the voice of your Divine Inner Self – our Soul Space. It is crucial to our personal power and peace of mind that keep our Soul connection open and active or our life will fade into the world view of “one size fits all.”

It used to be that we could come home and leave the world behind for a while and refresh ourselves. But today with our wonderful internet and instant messaging the world comes with us everywhere. It is up to each of us to choose when, how and where we will take a break and give the world a “do-not-disturb” notice.

My favorite method of turning “off” world opinions is by declaring my unique self in my home decor style and in my wardrobe. I also set aside time each morning and evening (I call it my book-ends) to just sit and be still. Sometimes I meditate but most often I contemplate and watch nature while in my garden or through a window. I get so many good ideas and answers during theses quite “off” moments that I keep a note pad handy to jot down what comes to me, but I am careful not to work it then. I pick it up later when I am back “on” for the day.

Our personal power comes from within, the world can’t help us. No one can sleep for you, no one can eat for you and no one can hear your unique Soul’s voice but you alone. Turn off the world now and then and check in with yourself. This is where your power lies; flip your inner switch ON! You have all the power you need. Stay connected to YOU by managing the world with your own personal “off” switch.

The Personal Space Journal

The Personal Space Journal is the way I keep track of the progress I am making as I explore my ever expanding self-empowerment. I use two types currently; one letter size for deep thought sessions and a minim 5 x 7 one for my decorating notes. You might even want a different one for each of the four Personal Space sections; Soul Space, Body Space, Home Space and Life Space, it’s a completely personal choice. Journal Writing

Choose any style and size that appeals to you. I use the larger size for my thoughts, questions and any epiphanies I might have. There is something about hand-writing things down that exercises the brain and clears our mind. I am reminded of the Harry Potter books and the “pensive” that Professor Dumbledore used to unload his mind; that is exactly what writing in my journal does for me.

Often in my blog posts I will refer to “taking notes” or “carry a sample” when talking about a Home-Space energy reboot project. For this purpose you can get by with a small wire notebook where you can jot down short notes and information. I use a that fits in my purse. It even has pockets in it for paint colors and fabric samples. This mini-journal is a smaller version of the Project Book (a three-ring binder) I will teach you about in a later post and easy to carry with you all the time. You never know when an idea or even a color sample will turn up.

Journals in various sizes are a tool I have used for over 30 years and even though today I carry my iPhone with me, I can’t see it ever fully replacing my hand-written journals. The reason for this is that hand-writing stimulates the brain where we store our creativity. It’s very easy to go from writing a thought to drawing a picture, so I highly recommend you employ this tool at least some of the time.

A second reason the electronic notes won’t work is when doing a decorating project you must have actual color samples with you as you shop because a photograph on your phone won’t represent the color accurately for matching purposes.

So by all means use your phone for taking notes and pictures but you will want to transfer them for storage in one place eventually and the hand written Personal Space Journal is a good choice.

I have also discovered that hand writing brings to the surface a deeper view of what is going on inside of my heart. It’s just too easy to self-edit as I write on my computer but with hand writing noting gets filtered and my deepest feelings are revealed. We need this depth if we are going to access our True power and revitalize our Personal Space energy.

I’d love to see a picture of your Personal Space Journals (the one I use for decorating is pictured here) and let me know how it works for you as you proceed on your project.

Are You Self-Conscious?

How self-aware or self-conscious are you? To be conscious is to be empowered. To be self-conscious is to be self empoweredSedona 1. The Personal Space journey is all about making our Personal Space “conscious space.” We do this by exploring what it means to be our authentic selves and then put those things we learn about ourselves into daily practice.

That’s right, Personal Space is a practice; the practice of being you. One of the reasons it needs to become a practice is because the world wants to pull you out of yourself; pull you out of self-consciousness. You have heard that “misery loves company” and until everyone else learns to be personally empowered aka self-aware and conscious they will feel miserable and encourage others to join them. Ever known someone who played the drama game of “ain’t it awful?” Then you know what I mean. TV, radio, printed and internet ads want you to “join the crowd” and be like everyone else; only we were not meant to conform, we were designed to be unique.

When you practice self consciousness over time you will do what it takes to be you in the world automatically, instinctively even. Your inner bossy ego voice that says “I want to be like the crowd”  or “I want to belong” will know to keep quiet and save its breath because you are so anchored and confident in your true self he/she can’t sway you any longer to go along with the crowd. From now on you do belong… you belong to yourself!

Once you are firmly self-established you will have great success expanding your space. This means moving out from your standard routine at home and entering the world while remaining true to your core values. You will know how to navigate in new territory because your inner senses are fully tuned and can lead you on. In other words you will have a fully active internal compass which will always point you in your true north direction.

Expanding your space is not about influencing others. It might seem that this is just what you are doing but that is the ego’s illusion. Expanding your space is more like a vibration that is strong and in tune. It surrounds you and keeps you in harmony with yourself while you are in the company of other vibrations and tunes. Like a radio wave that is floating out there invisible to the eye and unheard by the ear unless a tuning device is used and a particular channel chosen. You see, anyone who is influenced by you is in charge of their radio station selection. If they are tuned into you it’s on them to be influenced by your tune …. or not.

Never take the credit for another’s success, it can never be yours. It’s all theirs. Your credit, the credit you deserve, comes from living your life from inside-out and doing so out loud for the world to see if it chooses to. You do this with respect for yourself and all others.

Using Your “No” Power!

I was just a little girl and not yet in school when we got our first black and white TV and I remember it being a really big deal. When color TV came out it was even more exciting, because now it wasn’t just a box on a rickety stand, it was in a finely crafted piece of wood furniture…console TV.

Media in RoomEven before the TV we had a radio in our living room and from the start our listening time was limited. This was due to what time the stations were playing programs.  So even though I am a child of the mass communications age I didn’t feel it ruled our lives. Fast forward to 2015 and it’s an entirely different story.

Not only do we have multiple TV’s in our homes, perhaps one in every room to watch pre-recorded shows, we also have instant connection to the entire world through the internet and social media. The first telephone we had when I was a kid was a “party line” which meant our calls were not private and we had to go through an operator to ring someone. Today my phone is “smart” and can connect with the world in real time. Now before you think I am ancient, this was just 50 years ago and the previous 50 years only saw the invention of the telephone and radio!!

Inventions are happening much faster than they used to – are we keeping up? Are we “smart” with our phones and other electronics or do they control our lives?  What we do to get along and entertain ourselves has completely changed and I want to address how this has affected our ability to find and create separate space for ourselves – and maintain our personal power.

In order to have personal power we must first have our “person” intact. This was difficult to do when I was a teen/adult and it is exponentially more difficult today thanks to mass media and a plethora of devices. The choices we are presented with each day are too numerous to count and it’s easy to get lost in the sea of information and technology. The best way to combat this influx of sales stimuli is to make space for yourself where you can hear yourself think and more importantly feel yourself react to life. It is through our feelings that we can really know when we are in harmony with our True authentic self. The thinking mind or ego will want to “belong” in the world and since it perceives everything as danger, it rarely wants to take a stand and be unique. But your heart has all the courage you could ever need to stand up and be your true self. And this courage is fed by having a private spot within our protected personal space. I say protected because that is what we have to do. We do this by choosing what we will and won’t let into our space and this enables us to reclaim our power from the world that is invading our home.

Here is an example of what I mean; I was born at the end of the Korean War and soon we were in the Vietnam War. Three brothers, 2 cousins, and one uncle all served in the Navy and I was busy as a little girl writing letters and sending care packages so I was quite familiar with wartime energy-or so I thought. When we bombed Kuwait in 1991 live on TV I was not at all prepared and was shocked and horrified. You’d think with all the wars I had experienced I would be numb but they were never “live” in my living room. Neither was the explosion of the Challenger Spaceship or the bombing of the Twin Towers on my TV as a child. We do need to know what is going on in the world however we must say “no” when the media wants us to watch them 24-7 and inundate us with their minutia and bad reporting just for the sake of adding money to their coffers. Nor do we need to get shocked and upset for this helps and empowers no one!! Now more than ever our “no” power must be exerted. And remember this; every time you say “no ”you are saying ”yes” to something else you decided you want more such as peace of mind and space to collect and restore your own energy.

Today I limit how much and when I watch the news. I prepare myself and remind myself that the Universe is indeed in order even if it doesn’t look like it and I send blessings of love and light to all who appear in the media that are troubled. In this manner I use my “no” power in a way that is a “win-win” for all.

How do you use your “no” power?

Habits Get a Bad Rap

I think habits get a bad rap. Quite often when someone is mentioning a habit they are talking about something “bad” they want to change. I try not to refer to anything as “bad” anymore. When I remember to re-frame my thinking I will look at “bad” as an excellent teacher. For instance I will objectively watch myself and simply notice what I seem to do all-the-time that I want to change. I will then do a kind of self-interview and ask…

– why do I do this habit?
-how does it serve me?
-what prompts me to do it? -like an association from someone or other activity
– and do I have a belief that is the driving force behind it?

– next I will ask what would be the opposite of this habit and do I want to find a way to have that in my life instead.

Painting HabitMy most recent experience of changing or shifting habits as I prefer to think of it, was watching less TV in the hope I would get back to doing my watercolor painting which I actually love more. I am using a tip I got from Martha Beck called “Ridiculously Easy Steps.” It works like this. Instead of berating myself for doing the “bad” habit item I simply notice it, allow and accept that this is the best I can do right now AND in the next moment I can do better. So I begin to add my new better step in small “Ridiculously Easy” measures. Instead of attempting to watch less TV I simply add in the time I want to paint. I have discovered it works best at the end of my day. If I am tired I will pull out one of my art books and read it for 15 minutes or I will literally just sit in my art studio for 5-10 minutes. I created a whole list of baby steps and commit myself to doing one EVERY day. That’s the key to changing or building on a new habit. I think it’s best to let go of the idea of changing yourself and just think of it as shifting or adding in something you want more. Many of us cringe and get our dander up when we think there is something about us we need to change.  Next we do this for 21 daysIn A Row! That’s the behaviorist key for habit forming. Once we do something for 21 straight days it becomes embedded in our psyche. I have done this before and by the time the 21 days are up the time I spend doing the new activity actually increases and the new habit is formed.

“Life is what happens when we make plans” is a famous quote so from time to time I check my daily routine to see if “life” has forced new habits on me and have I lost something I love like my daily painting routine. It seems to be a frivolous activity (I am not a pro after all) yet it is very important to my souls energy and I have learned never to discount what my soul longs for.

So how do you feel about the word habit? Is it a positive energy word or a negative one? Do you have any new habits or routines you would like to add to your life? Pick a time and the activity then make it really, really easy to do and see if you can build on it over time. Martha Beck writes in her book that for her to develop the exercise at the gym habit, her first Ridiculously Easy step was to simply drive to the gym and park her car. She didn’t even get out for the first week. Gradually she did and now she is amazingly fit and trim.

It’s like pennies. We think they are not worth much but when you stop to consider that a million dollars starts with that first penny … you can see how it all adds up and one penny worth of effort will make your dreams come true!

Do You Have a Personal Private Spot?

We all need personal time to ourselves, but with our busy lives and constant activity via the internet it can be difficult to find this time and space. This is why I ask all of my clients to create for themselves somewhere in their home a personal private spot. This is a place in the home that you can call your own. No one else sits here or disturbs the possessions you keep here. Having this private space anchors us so that our energy is strong and stable. It is our “home base,” the place we return to at the end of the day or even during the day to collect our thoughts, to refresh and to center ourselves. Vision Practice Chair

It is our birthright to take up space our way. We are given our own Personal Space real-estate at the moment of conception. That spark of life from the Divine, our Soul Space, ignited the human life that was developing in the womb. This Soul and Body Space energy grew as we developed and experienced life. The personal private spot acts as a powerful root that keeps us grounded and allows us the time and space we need to reconnect with our true essence. Our energy is enhanced when we create this space by filling it with the things that give us comfort and joy.

You especially need to create and claim a personal power spot for yourself if you live with others. Those you live with can do this as well and as you respect each other’s private spaces and private time spent there, you will find your relationships improve. Taking up Personal Space consciously is akin to declaring ownership for your life. Before you think these steps sound like work, remember if you are not taking responsibility for your life then someone else is, and that someone else will have power over you.

Creating a space that you can call your very own, that no one will disturb without your permission is a vital step to reducing the stress in your life. It will also energize you and enhance your personal power. It’s the step that will allow you to expand and take up space in the world as the unique, distinctive individual that you are. You might think this message is only needed for young adults who are just beginning to express themselves in the adult world, but in fact most adults have lost much of their Personal Space over the years due to education, training, and social pressure. We are taught to fit-in, get along, cooperate and compromise until there is nothing left of the unique individual that we are at our core. Rarely are we encouraged in school, at work or in our families to “stand up and be different!”

This step of establishing your private power spot is so crucial to the Personal Space Journey that it is the #1 Energy Check I use for my Home-Space Energy Review.

Personal Private Spots are as diverse are we are, and no matter your living conditions I can help you create one for yourself. Please write and tell me about your space and how you make it uniquely yours. If you need ideas or support let me know.

I would love to hear about the places you have created for yourself.

The Inner Holiday

From Thanksgiving until New Year we have the “Winter Holiday Season” which can be quite overwhelming to our senses. We are inundated with music, color, lights, gifts, food, social events, and nonstop commercials to buy this or that. With all this activity it can be difficult to remember that the holiday season is really only happening inside of us!! The power for how we mark this time of year (happy, sad, chaotic, peaceful etc.) is not up to Toys R Us, JC Penney or Starbucks. It’s not up to your mother, your friends, the local church, your Rabbi or your neighbors. It is only up to you.

Sedona Day OffOur senses act as personal filters for everything going on around us. Our thoughts and beliefs tell us how we feel about what we are experiencing. For example; this time of year we have a big selection of major movie releases and this year has a doozy with the continuation of the Star Wars series. No matter how much money this movie makes there will be a huge range of opinions about it – no two people who see it will see the same movie. And the same is true for what our experience of Christmas or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa will be. It’s in our hands alone; the power to filter what comes across our path. We get to choose what to think, what to say, and what to feel in every moment. No one can control us for they don’t live inside of us. No one is in our minds, our hearts or lives behind our eyes but us.

But there is a trick to doing this “choosing” especially this time of year. The trick is to get quiet time for yourself daily if you can, even if it’s just for just 15 minutes. This will help you to restore your energy and collect your thoughts so you feel centered and balanced as you dance through all the activities you have planned. It will also help you to process and download the overload to your senses so you can detach and choose what is best for yourself in the moment.

No matter what happens in your life during this time of year, you can choose peace. You can choose to be happy and grateful or stressed and miserable. Flexibility is your best friend here. Bear in mind that plans are just that PLANS; not events taking place in the current moment, and plans can and will be changed, so remain open to this and flex with what does happen next. Be okay with what comes next and the right response to it will occur to your now open mind. This is how to maintain the feeling of peace inside yourself; which you can choose no matter what is going on outside of you. The first best choice you can make will be to find time for contemplative peace daily.

Give yourself  the gift of happiness this holiday season by taking short breaks and get away from it all. This way you can find happiness and gratitude over and over and over again and your holiday season will be wonderful!

Happy Holidays!

The True Cost of a Gift

Just before Thanksgiving I heard a commercial for some item that a local department store was selling that they guarantee is “the best price ever” for this item…”get more for your money” at this location….”it’s the best value anywhere” and that’s when it hit me. Is this the “best value” anywhere? How could it be if purchasing it voids the values you possess? You see in order to get this “best price ever” you have to be at this store by midnight on Thanksgiving night, not to mention MIDNIGHT??? Who are we freakin kidding here? How in the world is that the best value? Spoil one holiday in favor of another? And is it even honoring the winter holiday sentiment of “peace and goodwill toward men” to go to these extremes to purchase the perfect gift? As if you won’t be loved and your holiday won’t be a good one unless you get some specific gift at just the right price? Just how is that goodwill? Believe

In order to tally up the real cost of this item I think you have to answer a few questions such as;

  • What is a good night sleep worth to you?
  • What is your Thanksgiving holiday worth to you?
  • Is the gift you are giving and the person you are getting it for worth the $5.00 or the $50.00 you “save” by being up at midnight on Thanksgiving?

So this got me thinking…just what is the cost of a gift? And should a gift really cost anything at all? Let me explain. There are gifts that are completely money free such as; doing someone a favor like washing the dishes for them, taking care of a loved one when they get the flu, or giving someone a compliment, or how about just smiling at the lady at the checkout counter? All are free and all really appreciated.

Then there are gifts that cost money but if you have that money saved away for buying gifts it’s not much of a cost now is it? If you go into debt on your credit card then that gift just became infinitely more “costly.” What about the time you spend to purchase a gift or the gas you use? Say you go to store after store because they are out of stock? What about if you feel guilty because the gift you wanted you couldn’t get so you go for some other item to “make up for their disappointment” and it is more expensive than the one you intended to purchase.

I think it’s important that the giver truly enjoy the shopping, and selecting experience. This puts positive energy on the gift for everyone involved.

Also stop and get clear and “own” what you give and “why” you are giving it because what we give instantly comes back to us. The give-receive energy exchange is instantaneous and both parties are receiving the intent, the energy behind the gift. So if you stress over the gift, you receive stress. If you give to manipulate someone, you are the one manipulated. If you give to show someone you love and cherish them, you are then the recipient of love and adoration as well.

As you move through this holiday season selecting gifts ask yourself, what was the real cost of the gift? If you say “noting” because of the joy and love you got in giving it then I say you succeeded where most fail. You got the point of it all.

So don’t let the store ads push you into doing something you wouldn’t “love” to do. Take your power back and be a deliberate gift giver this year. Have fun shopping and give with love for all.

Happy Holidays!

Personal Space Awareness Exercises

Most of us think of our Personal Space as being just our Body Space  but in fact the boundaries of our Personal Space encompass four distinct aspects; Soul, Body, Home and Life. To show you what I mean I’ve created a few exercises you can try out and see if you can expand your experience to include all four areas. The various tips and tricks I have to share on how to make good use of the full scope of your Personal Space  will assist in boosting your overall energy as you get to know yourself better. PSC Logo

Personal Space Exercises:

Body Space – How do you choose to look each day?

  • Are you a bright colors kind of person, or is black your theme color?
  • Do you dress casually or formally when given a choice?
  • Do you wear comfortable shoes or stylish 3” spikes that hurt your feet but make you feel powerful anyway?

Observing what you chose for your wardrobe and why you have chosen it, will add to the affect you are trying to create. If any of your choices are for “other approval” and not what you would do if you “had a choice,” then I recommend you explore this further and see why you value the opinion of others over your own. That is a major energy drainer we all deal with because we can’t really get approval from another – it can only genuinely come from within. If what you wear is not your choice due to work requirements – see if you can find a way to personalize your outfit such as wearing jewelry or some other item that isn’t against the rules yet allows you to express your individuality.

Home Space – Rooms or Spaces You Avoid

Do you have any rooms you “junk” or closets or drawers that you just toss things in and then you never visit them again? This is a mirror action to things in your life you are not “owing” and dealing with as well. Perhaps you have a health issue you ignore or want a new job but don’t have the energy to do the work to find it. Oddly enough by cleaning out these “junk” areas you may find the disowned areas in your life magically get done….all by just cleaning out the equivalent energy that is stored in your home.

Soul Space – Quiet Time

Remember Kindergarten days when school was a half-day and even then we had rest or nap time? What makes us think as adults that the need for daily rest and rejuvenation is no longer necessary? No wonder we get white hair and arthritis – we never give ourselves restful Quite Time anymore. Unfortunately the voice of our Soul – in “inner voice” is a whisperer and the only way to access it is to BE QUIET. I think as adults we notice how much needs to get done and we think we must push on or it will never get done….guess what? It never does get done and that is actually a good thing for it gives us something to look forward to …tomorrow after we rest and revive ourselves.

Life Space – How Happy Are You?

As a fun exercise you might take this short quiz daily for one week. Jot down your answers in your cell phone or note pad. Set a reminder that will go off at these specific six times a day;

  1. Just after waking
  2. Right before lunch
  3. Right after lunch
  4. Mid afternoon
  5. Just after you get home for the day
  6. Just before bed

At each designated time stop what you are doing for just a second and ask  “how happy am I right now?” Rate this on a scale of 1-10 with 1 = “miserable” to 10= “dancing on air.”

After one week look over your notes and see if you notice a pattern in your mood swings. Next try to find a way to re-energize the low moments and build upon the high moments. For instance you might find first thing in the morning you are “miserable” but after lunch you feel “great” – perhaps you don’t let yourself have a moment for a food you love in the morning? What could you add to your morning that would energize you? Wake up to music vs a screaming alarm? Pass on the morning depressing news? Eat a favorite blueberry muffin? You get the picture.

Give these tips a try and see if you get a new image of just how large your Personal Space truly is and how powerful it can be for you when you consciously own and use all the space power you have been given.

What Is Your Brand?

Have you ever considered yourself as a “brand?” I sure haven’t …until recently that is. It seems to be all the rage these days to “brand yourself” and I find it a bit confusing and not a little odd. Although when I think about our Personal Space I realize that it is actually natural to think we each have a unique brand or style, because we do. However we are also flexible and evolving so I image a “brand” you give yourself this year might not fit you in ten years. PSC Logo

The key to successful “branding” I believe lies in our core values. What do we stand for? What do we believe in? What matters most to us? By answering these questions we can find the theme behind our “brand” even as we evolve and change over time. For instance say you valued organization and all your possessions and work habits lay claim to this value. Then your “brand” would be “a naturally orderly and tidy man/woman.” Be careful not to let other’s brand you. Only you can know for sure if a label or value is true for you. Also be willing to change over time, for as our circumstances change so does our focus. Listen to your heart and you will always be rooted in your own personal truth.

Currently I am attempting to create the “brand” for my Personal Space Coach program. I know that my program is an unconventional way of looking at the Personal Space we all possess so I wanted to find a way to show this in my logo. Although it is still in the process of being finalized, I know for sure it will look something like this.

The core of my program stems from our Home Space. I believe and have experienced how our Home Space can either support our life or interfere with it. We can learn so much about ourselves by observing how we take up space in the rooms of our own home and when we make changes to improve our Home Space Energy our Body Space – health, our Life Space – dreams and our Soul Space – spirit and passion are all enhanced as a result. So I knew a home shape was needed in my logo, but how to represent the rest?

As usual when I pose a question if the answer doesn’t come right away I will let it go for awhile. Then when I least expect it an answer will come to mind. Sure enough while journaling one morning I got a clear picture of my Personal Space Coach logo. This is what came to me.

  • A large outside circle – to represent our Souls Space
  • A house with a chimney – to represent the Home Space we create in the world to support ourselves and the chimney represents our passion
  • Inside the house shape I put a star shaped human form which represents Body Space. I have the head connected – no line separating head to shoulders to represent the open energy from heart to mind. I like the star-human shape because it represents that we are each the “star” of our own life story.
  • I have the Body Space star-human with its arms spread out wide to represent our energy going out into the world which is our Life Space. This star-human is expressing its energy out wide to say… “This is MY space!”
  • In the center of the star-human is a circle with a heart which represents that Soul Space is both within us and surrounds us (large outer circle) and that our link to the Divine comes through our heart. Our best energy and empowerment comes from having a Soulful Open Heart.

I’ll let you know when the final logo is complete, meanwhile what would your own brand-logo look like? Something fun to consider.
